Automation (and software in general) is becoming more and more essential to every-day operations. Attending the annual UCT Careers Festival not only gives us a chance to meet the next generation, but to chat to them and introduce them to the Software Development industry as a whole.
Our message this year was a resounding “EVERYONE needs to understand software and its capabilities”, regardless of your career path. We met and spoke to a stream of bright-eyed students, eager to find out more from our team of SOLIDitech professionals who included staff from our Marketing, Scrum Management, Quality Assurance, and Software Engineering departments.
This year’s event took place as an EPIC Careers Festival in UCT’s Sports Centre on Wednesday 8 August 2018. We say ‘EPIC Careers Festival’ as, differently to previous years where each career stream was given a separate day to attend, ALL businesses, streams and promoters were invited to attend a single day of career-minded recruitment and education. It was a blast.
Close to 100 stands took over the 3 Sports Centre Halls. There was a CV lab, a TED-style talk series and a job wall which presented all the jobs that were on offer.
Our interactive stand gave the students a chance to engage with us, play around with our BB8 droid, take part in our Java Challenge and answer a very important question:
“Do you understand what Software Automation can do?”
Students voted either “Yes” or “No” with plastic balls depending on the extent to which they understood how automation is used in our everyday lives. It was great to see that most students understood the concept, as evidenced by the photo below.

Competitions and Prizes
We ran 2 competitions during the course of the expo:
(1) A lucky draw competition. This ran on the day and all students had to do was fill in an entry form and drop it off at our stand. The prize? A BB-8 sphero droid!
Congratulations to Mfundo Thela on winning the BB8.
(2) The SOLID Java Challenge. This challenge ran for a full week, starting at the UCT Careers Festival. We wanted to encourage students to hone their skills on Java, the coding language we primarily use here at SOLIDitech. Students had the opportunity to complete a short coding challenge, and those that got 100% were entered into a lucky draw.
Congratulations to Shaheel Kooverjee on winning the grand prize – a Nintendo Switch, with case and game.
A TED-style Talk
Manuel De Jesus, our CEO, delivered an insightful and very successful TED-style Talk on why everyone should understand software and its capabilities.
“One thing is certain, software is changing the world we live in and this trend is only going to accelerate. Understanding software will help you adapt to this changing world and may even put you in the driving seat… Whatever mode of transport you may choose!” [Manuel De Jesus]
We had a great day with tonnes of students interested in what we do and how they could become part of the SOLID family. A special thanks to those who helped us, both from behind the scenes and on the day at the stand – we could not have done this without you.
