With cups of popcorn and colourful stickers flying around, our team thoroughly enjoyed meeting the students of UCT at the 2017 UCT Technology Career Expo on Wednesday, 23 August 2017.
Our goal for the day was to give students an opportunity to meet actual Software Engineers and chat to them about what it’s really like to be in the Software Development industry.
Some common questions we had were:
- What does a Software Engineer actually do?
- What practical skills would I use in my job?
- What career prospects are there?
- What do you do in a typical day?
If you would like to find out more about what it’s like to be a Software Engineer, visit our Career Advice page. On the page is top advice for future Software Engineers, directly from our team. It includes their top tips and tricks in addition to answers to some common career questions.
As we like to think outside the box here at SOLIDitech, we figured we would do nothing less at the UCT Technology Career Expo:
Interactive Stand – What do YOU think makes a great Software Engineer?
We wanted to see what the students thought about what makes a great Software Engineer. So, each person who visited our stand got a colourful dot sticker and was given the opportunity to make their mark by placing it on our stand.
The final result? Clearly “problem solving skills” came out tops, followed closely by “creativity”. There really was no wrong answer, and the point of the exercise was to prove to up and coming Developers that being a great Software Engineer is about more than just learning to code.
Free popcorn anyone?
Students are hungry for more than just career development so we handed out free popcorn throughout the day. Caterkid was kind enough to help us organise a popcorn machine with all the trimmings. The popcorn was a real hit and was enjoyed by many of the students that visited our stand whilst listening to our software engineers giving their insights into the day in the life of a Software Engineer.
The SOLID Codewars Challenge
To encourage future Engineers to hone their skills and to introduce them to one of the many free platforms on which to do that, we hosted the 2017 SOLID Codewars Challenge.
Entrants needed to register, create a Codewars account for themselves and then solve puzzles in a development language of their choice to earn ‘Honor’ (points). Those with 6 points or more were eligible for our lucky draw.
The Challenge ran from the expo and continued until noon on Friday, 25 August 2017.
Congratulations to our winner, Luveshen Pillay.
Luveshen has won a brand new DJI Spark Drone and picked it up from our offices today, Tuesday, 29 August 2017.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the Codewars Challenge. It is fantastic to see so many of you continuing to earn as much honor as possible – advancing your skills through practice.
A special thank you to our SOLID team, who handed out over 400 cups of popcorn and helped over 300 students vote on what makes a great Software Engineer. Throughout the entire day each SOLID staff member made a special effort with the students and answered as many questions as they could. It was our team that made the day such a success.
