2020 Marks the 10th year of the UCT Developer Society’s (DevSoc) #BreakTheRules event and lockdown wasn’t going to get in the way of continuing the tradition. DevSoc rose to the occasion and hosted this year’s first ever virtual event via Zoom.
We, SOLIDitech, were once again proud to join other leading software and technology companies like Allan Gray and AWS. With students and presenters online, attendance topped over one hundred people; not too bad for the first ever virtual #BreakTheRules.
Each presenter was allotted a time slot at the end of their presentations for a brief Q&A and some very engaged and thoughtful questions were asked.
Manuel De Jesus, our CEO, gave an engaging presentation on SOLIDitech – who we are, what we do and how we solve real-world problems like the need for high-speed internet access. He also raised the importance of the role Software Engineers play, and the valuable skills they bring to the table, in solving some of the challenges South African companies have in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After explaining our Work Experience and Internship Programs, he opened up our #BreakTheRules ‘Dev Challenge’. This Java-based coding challenge tested the UCT DevSoc members’ coding skills, and our prize, a R2,000 Takealot voucher, was won by Sebastian Oliver.
Sebastian is a 2nd year Computer Science and Computer Engineering student at UCT and will “mostly likely spend the voucher on new headphones”. Enjoy the shopping Sebastian!
Thank you to everyone who took part in our competition, and thank you DevSoc for the great event. We look forward to the next #BreakTheRules.
